Sound analysis: blog task
1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film:
- Diegetic and non-diegetic sound
- Parallel and contrapuntal sound
- Sound bridges
Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip:
- Music
- Dialogue
- Voiceover
- Sound effects
You also need to highlight or put in bold any use of media language.
I used the film A Quiet place where in this clip the sound the diegetic sounds that were used were the sound of the leaves rustling, the bare footsteps, the creaking of the bridge, the flow of the water, the muffled sound for the deaf character, the sound of the toy, the cricket of the monster, and the scream of the child at the end, which was a bit faint. These sounds were used to connote the idea of building tension or intensity for the audience to be intrigue in the film. Also, the use of the bare footsteps sound may have been added during post-production to give an authentic sound which could also be a sound effect. The non-diegetic sounds that were used were the sad solemn and slow music at the start to connote the idea that there's tragedy happening, the building up music when the child character turned on the toy where the music was slowly building up to fast paced tempo to connote the idea of tension slowly building up.
At the first part of the clip, it uses a parallel sound where the sound is what you would expect in the scene. The use of a solemn and slow non-diegetic sound at the beginning while the scene shows that the setting was a mess and looks abandoned shows that it's parallel to each other. In addition, the use of the muffled sound when the deaf character was shown is also parallel as it allows the audience to experience what the character's point of view is. Furthermore, the use of sound bridges was also used, from the beginning of the clip the use of the solemn non-diegetic sound was used until 27 seconds, where it already showed a range of different scenes with its own sound. In addition, the use of the muffled sound for the deaf character continues to extend until 1:32 where the father runs towards his son, and the muffled sound continue and flows to a building up sound. Also, the use of the building up sound extends until the end where the child was captured by the monster.
Extension/additional task
A Clockwork Orange
1. The use of the non-diegetic sound with a fast-paced instrumental in the background and a non-diegetic voice over while someone is talking about a narrative or their story could be the kind of music that I would expect as it builds up intensity as the main character (who may be a psycho) attacks the other characters, where the voiceover of his story may be a bit odd to be added in the scene which reinforces the idea that the main character is a psycho.
2. The director may have used this piece to go with the action on the screen to show how it is parallel to the main character as he is violent and has a sadistic action.
Life on Mars
1.The sound helps establish the setting and time period as it only has instrumental sound and it's a bit funky which could connote that the time period the film's from would be around the 1970s.
2. Diegetic sound:
-Screech of tires
-Engine of cars
-Shouting/dialogue
-Opening of the care door
-Hit of the cars against each other
Non-diegetic sound:
Background sound track (fast-paced)
The impact of the sound on the audience is that it's very upbeat which could give the audience excitement.
Once Upon A Time In The West
1. Diegetic sounds:
-Footsteps
-Creaking (windmill)
-Droplets of water
-The character playing with the water
-The buzz of the fly
-Whimper of the dog
-Blowing of the character
-Cracking fingers
-Train
-Siren
-Birds chirping
-Gun slammed on the wall
-Wind
-When the guy put his hat down
-Rocking chair
-Pull of the wire
-Machine (telegram)
They help build up the tension because there's no dialogue or soundtracks but only the silence and it allows the audience to focus on the subtle cues to help build their anticipation.
2. The sound bridge of the train coming before the sound and the sound of the creaking windmill throughout the clip. The effect on the audience could be that they might feel anxious and agitated as a repeated sound like the creaking could be annoying.
Once Upon A Time In America
1. Diegetic sound:
-Rustle of paper
-Rain
-Instruments
-Chatter of people
-Slurping
-Coughing
-Tinkling bell
Non-diegetic sound:
-Telephone ringing which was non-diegetic at the start throughout until the scene shows at the police station which was the source of the ringing.
-Telephone ringing which was non-diegetic at the start throughout until the scene shows at the police station which was the source of the ringing.
2. The director use the sound of the phone to link to the narrative to signifies the main character's guilt as the scenes showed how he's alive and his friends are dead and how it's a constant reminder for the main character.
