Lighting blog task

 1) Still image analysis


Look at the still images on slides 33-37 of the Film Language Powerpoint linked above. Copy the images into your blog and answer the following questions for each image:
  1. Identify examples of high and low-key lighting.
  2. Say which depict top, back or under lighting.
  3. What effects are created by the lighting in each image?     

1. Low-key lighting connoting enigma, where the light focuses on the smoke which could connote that she could be hiding something.

2. The lighting seems to be coming from the back or side of the female character to kind of emphasise her facial expression which could also suggest that she's the villain.

3.The effects created by lighting could be the idea that she's the villain due to the light not being totally directed at her which could connote that she may have a dual character or the idea that she could be hiding something.

1. It is a low-key lighting, connoting enigma codes due to the idea that her face is the only thing that the light is focused on.

2. It is a top lighting which could highlight her glamarous look. It also only has a key light and no filler light.

3. The effects could seem that she's isolated and vulnerable as the only light is coming from above like a small window.
1. It's a low-key lighting which focuses on his facial expression and the intensity of it.

2. It's a top lighting and a key light which kind of gives a natural lighting from the sun, connoting that he may be outside.

3. The effects created by the light could be that there's uncertainty as to how the light's focused on his facial expression which could also connote that he might be hiding something. 

1. It is a low-key lighting due to the contrast between the shadows and the light which could give an enigmatic code.

2. It is a top lighting which could be on the side due to his other side of the face having a huge contrast with the other based on the shadows.

3. The effects of the light could give off an idea that he's powerful which could also suggest that he's the villain as it doesn't show his full face, connoting the idea that he might have a dual character.

1. This is a high key lighting as it shows that the contrast between the shadow and the light are smooth. However, it could also be a low key lighting due to the sharp contrast of her actual shadow and the light.

2. This is a key light which shows that it only focuses on the female character, focusing on her body language and facial expression.

3. The effects of the light in this image could be the idea that something, based on the shadow could be the reason why her facial expression seems like she's shocked.

1. It is a low key lighting as it shows the dramatic shadows on both characters, which are coming from the blinds.

2. This image has a filler light and a key lighting as it shows how the back feature of the male character can still be seen and as for the lighting on the side it could act as a natural light coming from outside the window.

3. The effects of lighting could give a hidden effect or the idea that it is normal which could also create a slower vibe.

1. This is a low key lighting as it shows the complete contrast between the light and the shadows of the character.

2. This image has a back lighting as it almost forms a whole silhouette.

3. The effects of this lighting could be the idea that it is a part of a revelation of their identity.

1. This image has a high key lighting as the contrast between light and dark are less obvious, which shows us her facial expression.

2. This has a key lighting and a filler light as it shows how her face is smoothen out a bit and you could see the full outline of her face, connoting that this could be something dramatic.

3. The effects of the lighting could be the idea that she just found out something due to the lighting focused on her facial expression but in this case it's not her full face, connoting that this might be an emotional moment.

1. This image has a high key lighting as it is shows how the features of her face and her jaw are smoothen out.

2. This has a top lighting as it shows the shadows on her neck, giving a more natural light which could connote that the person may be someone important.

3. The effects of the lighting could be the idea that it's solemn and how the reaction is important as it shows that the lighting focuses on her whole face.
1. This is a low key lighting as it shows that it doesn't really shows much of the setting, connoting the idea of enigma codes.

2. This only has a back lighting as it barely shows the setting but you can still see the features or outline of the male character.

3. The effects of the lighting in this image could be the idea of mystery and tension where the intensity is building up as you can't see anything.
1. This image has a high key lighting which could connote the idea of the softness of the male character towards the female character as the contrast of the shadows smoothens out.

2. This image seems to have a underlighting as it shows how the shadows are captured.

3. The effects of this lighting could give an idea of drama or it could show that there could be a plot as the light coming from under them doesn't seem very natural.

Note: if the images don't display correctly in your blog then simply use the number of each image and answer the three questions for each.

2) Film noir research 

Research film noir - focusing on the genre’s distinctive lighting style. Make notes on the genre and particularly the use of lighting - bullet points are fine.

3) Film noir YouTube clip analysis 

Finally, find a YouTube clip that fits the film noir genre and embed it under your research (the clip can be classic noir from the 1950s or something more recent - neo-noir). How does the clip's lighting fit the film noir genre? 
The clip's lighting fits the film noir genre as it shows a use of low key lighting which barely shows the outline of some parts of the setting.
