Media Paper 2 learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write the mark/grade if you do not wish to).

Q1.

WWW - Very good attempt to using Hall’s reception theory

EBI - Consider representations of gender

Q2.

WWW - Good grasp of key contextual factors

EBI - ET section work off-topic focussing on marketing rather than distribution/consumption

-more industry details needed

2) Read the mark scheme for this exam carefully (posted on your exam teacher's Google Classroom), paying particular attention to the the 'indicative content' for each question. Firstly, focus on the unseen question and identify two aspects of the poster that you could have written about in your answer.

Q1

- the title as a sign anchors the possible meaning of the image – white-collar professionals as gangsters

- the skyline of contemporary/futuristic skyscrapers are signifiers of the city, banking/finance etc; this is reinforced by the costumes which suggest white-collar professionals

3) Look at the indicative content for Q1 again and make a note of any theories or examples of media terminology you could have used in your answer.

-Different modes and languages

-Combination of element of media language influence meaning

-Alvorado’s theory

-Cultural conviviality

4) Now focus on the TV 25-marker. Read this exemplar response for the TV question and pick out three arguments, phrases or theories from the essay that you could use in a future question on Capital and Deutschland 83.

Although positive representations of asylum seekers and immigration - plus the negative portrayal of the upper-middle class white Yount family - suggest left wing ideologies are being promoted, all the characters audiences are encouraged to sympathise with work hard and contribute to the economy.

Applying Gramsci’s theory of hegemony, this is unconsciously communicating to audiences the value in working hard, earning money and contributing to consumerism and capitalism - maintaining the status quo and reinforcing more right wing ideology.

The supermarket scene in the West where Martin first sees the plentiful food, colourful fruit and policemen eating ice creams presents the West as offering a much higher standard of living than the East and

therefore reinforcing the dominant capitalist ideology we see across so much of western media. Similarly, in the spy training montage split-screen editing and visual effects are used to present the difference between East and West with fruit appearing on the western side and an empty space on the East. The message to audiences is clear: life is better in the

West.

5) Finally, identify three things you need to revise for Media Paper 2 before your next assessment of mock exam.

-Industry details for both Capital and Deutschland 83

-Learn the key scenes from Capital and Deutschland 83 (using A3 sheet)

-try considering more representations (practicing exam questions or just planning)
