Editing: blog analysis

 Your final analytical blog task is to find a film or television clip on YouTube that you feel has been edited in a distinctive way and write a 750 word analysis of the clip.

Hot Fuzz (2007) opening scene 

From 30 seconds of the opening scene, it starts off smoothly with the doors automatically opening as the male character starts walking. The lighting of this part is from behind to produce a silhouette, which kind of gives an enigma as the identity of the character is unknown. In addition, the camera in this part starts to slowly move towards the character, giving a sense of suspense and how it shows that the audiences' focus should be on that character. There's also a diegetic sounds where we could hear the footsteps of the character getting louder as they get closer, connoting that the narrative is intensifying. 

The lighting when the identity of the male character was shown, shows how on both sides there is different lighting both high-key and low-key lighting as one side shows that his feature was sharp and the other side is not, where there is more shadows. When the male character showed his ID, the camera zoomed in in a fast pace towards it, connoting the idea that it is giving a tension, shifting the audiences' focus to create a specific emotional impact. The jump cut from the wallet to the tracking close up shot of the male character's footsteps could connote enigma codes and it again builds up tension. In addition, there is a lot of match on actions, where the camera moves from a medium shot to a close up shot, connoting intensity and this is reinforced by the idea that the close up shots highlights the details of his facial expressions and putting the audience into the character's subjective experience. Also, there is a extreme close up shot on the character's shoulder where it shows "HF 777", connoting the idea that he might me involved in a group, could be the police due to his radio and costume, this could also suggest that he may have a high position in this group as his body language shows how he seems confident. 

In addition, the tempo and pace is fast paced, which could connote that there is chaos and could possibly lean on the negative. Furthermore, there is a use of fade out transition, where the screen turns to black from the character's side profile to a range of male group on their side profile, this use of transition could connote the passing of time or a flashback which could be a non-linear narrative. In addition, the panning of the camera could connote the significance of what they seem to be training for. This is reinforced with the way their body language is as they are in position with their hands together like in the army. Their facial expressions seems to be stern, connoting and reinforcing the serious situation they seem to be in. In addition, there is a steady cam moving forward to focus on the facial expression of the main character, connoting that the narrative is again focusing on the perspective of the main character. Furthermore, there is smash cut from the steady cam to a scene where the setting seems to show a training field, where all men seems to be in action. Also, there is a montage and it is showing a fast pace, connoting intensity and action. In addition, there is a range of transitions such as the flashing and some overlapping collage to show how there is a lot of things going on at once, it could also connote the violence of the situation. This is reinforced with the fire around as well as the props, which are the shield and their masks, to prevent the smoke coming in their lungs. There is also a handheld camera, where it shows how the situation is chaotic and to give the audiences a experience on what the characters are experiencing. 

In addition, they used another smash cut to change to another setting and scene. This is where they showed a prop of a document, where as the person flips the paper it zoomed in a bit closer and then it moves closer again, using a close up shot. This could connote that there could be some important information, in this scene it also shows how the main character is answering these question. The close up shot could perhaps connote how he can answer quickly as there is another smash cut of the paper to a long shot, moving forward to a medium shot. This could connote the intensity building up to a climax as there is a range of different cuts that are fast paced.
