Preliminary exercise: Research and planning

1) State the song you have chosen for your preliminary exercise.

The song that I have chosen for my preliminary exercise is Dive.

2) Choose at least three music videos similar to your concept and watch a clip or more from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene.
  • Costume - Casual brown jacket, denim skirt and brown high boots to create that sense of identity for the artist, showing how her clothes are casual and indentifiable for audiences
  • Lighting - high-key lighting due to it filmed outside
  • Actor - her body language shows her moving freely due
  • Make-up and hairstyle - her make-up shows a simple make up while wearing a low bun to create that sense of authenticity
  • Props - she has simple tote-like-bag and some shells she picks along the way to again create personal identification
  • Setting - at the beach creating that high-key lighting
  • Film effect throughout the whole music video to create that sense of nostalgia
  • Loads of hand held shots to create that realism
  • Close up shot of earrings and to focus on her facial expresion
  • Costume - Casual sleepwear, dress and denim jacket portraying comfort
  • Lighting - High-key lighting and low-key lighting to create a binary opposition
  • Setting - A range of loads of settings but starts with the artist being in a her bedroom, reminscing memories
  • At the start it shows a picture in picture kind of effect, where she watches her own clips to create that sense of nostalgia
  • Use of montage to create that sense of dynamic energy as well as to show the connections of each scene with a jump cut to the actual videos
  • Loads of zoom in and outs to emphasise the artist's expression as well as hand hels cameras which creates that authenticity
  • A range of extreme close up to give that silly vibe
  • Most of her clips are from her daily life which kind of gives the audience that sense of personal identity in her life
  • Costume - Simple outift with a simple pink skirt and top which gives that province and demure style
  • Lighting - High-key lighting as it was filmed outside and also the fact that the artist is showing her family, creating that light, family oriented concept
  • Setting - The setting shows a province from her home town to probably represent her culture
  • Hand held cameras and over-the-shoulder shot to create realism and to kind of gain that perspective from the audience
  • Jump cut to the artist to reinforce Godwin's conventions, focusing on the artist and the use of narrative and concept, showcasing her culture
  • There's some sense of parallel between the lyrics and visual as it shows the artist lip syncing the lyrics, reinforcing Godwin's convention
  • A short montage of the artist looking at her baby pictures giving that sense of identification for her audience

3) Write a short music video treatment for your extract (this is basically a script for your TikTok music video). You can find an example of a treatment here. If you are making your real coursework then feel free to use the treatment from your summer project.

45-60 seconds video

Costume - Casual clothing
Lighting - High-key lighting
Actor - Artist will act freely while going on with her usual life
Make up - Simple make up

Colour scheme - Light concept such as blues and whites

Scene 1: The clip will focus on the scenery, the coast.

The camera moves like a panning shot, towards the right with a slow motion effect. There will then be a shut off effect between scene 1 and scene 2, where scene 2 will continue.

Scene 2: The artist in a car showing her perspective.

The camera will act as a POV shot pointing towards the window of the car, showing the road, scenery and journey. A jumpcut will be used to go into scene 3.

Scene 3: The artist walking at the beach in her perspective, focusing down on her footsteps on the pebbly beach.

The camera will be pointed down towards the artist's steps, as a close up shot, while she walks on the pebbly beach. She will walk for around five seconds. A jump cut will again be added to go into scene 4.

Scene 4: The artist near the coast, walking alone.

The camera will follow her using a medium shot as she walks towards a long pathway with her cap on. A distorted effect going into scene 5 where the artist will be seen in a different location, at the park.

Scene 5: The artist hangs out at the park alone while crouching down with her phone and bag.

The camera first focus at the scenery of the part with that showcases a golden hour and then goes down towards the artist where the camera will be tilted as a high-angle shot towards the artist. A shut off effect going into scene 6, showing her journey to the park (walking to the bus stop, being in the bus and going to the train station) and how she spent her day.

Scene 6: The artist is shown being in a journey to the park.

The camera will zoom in on the character's feet while walking towards the bus stop. The camera will show the view that the artist is looking at and then the camera will pan downwards where the artist's hands are.

Scene 7:

The camera will zoom in on the character's face while she's on the bus, she will be looking out as she watches other cars pass by. The camera will be on a tilt, leaning on one side, which will look like a phone camera left on a seat that's recording the artist.

Scene 8:

The camera will pan from left to right, showing the station, where it will then focus on the artist with a medium shot while she goes inside. The camera will then have a montage of different clips of POV shot from the artist as she taps her oyster card in and then walking down the stairs. The camera will be tilted downwards and then slightly upwards to where the artist will she the railyway, which is on the right hand side.

Scene 9:

The camera will have an over-the-shouder shot of the artist, going inside the train and then a few zoom in and outs of the artist.

Scene 10: The artist at the park having fun.

The camera will be on a hand-held motion while the artist runs. The camera will start from a close-up shot of a scenery and then zoom out which will then focus on the artist, panning to the right. A few long shots, close ups, medium shots and zoom ins of the artist having fun.

Scene 11: The artist will walk past the camera at the park

The camera will focus on the artist walking to it. The camera will track the artist while she walks where the artist's shoulder will hit the camera and then left on the ground while it's tilted. A shut off effect will be added.

4) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing (in a music video you will find you need FAR more shots than you think, particularly close-ups). These additional shots can be close-ups, alternative angles or something more creative. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word/Google Docs to set out your shot list - you can find an example here (this is from narrative filmmaking but the same format can be used for any video project).

Shot list

5) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre and style of your artist? Plan your settings, costume, make-up, props and lighting.

CLAMPS:
Costume - the costume for my artist will all be casual and simple outfits such as a simple dress or a simple top with white denim shorts to create that sense of realism and personal identification for my target audience.

Lighting - I will mostly use a high-key lighting to create that sense of escapism, light concept and tranquility. This will also reinforce that sense of summer vibe as it will mainly focus on during the day.

Actor - For my artist's body language, she will act like how she is in reality as I intertextualise with the music videos that I analysed where the clips will mainly be exported using a handheld camera, focusing on intimate, nostalgic and raw home-movie feel.

Make up - My artist will only use simple make up so that she will be identifiable for her target audience.

Setting - The settings that I will use will be at the beach, park and focusing on my artist's journey where it will not only show her being in that location but to also focus on her journey to highlight to her target audience that there will always be a journey and again for her gaining that identification.

The iconography that I will focus on will be that my clips will show my artist acting casually, where she will be going on with her life, acting all silly and goofy, and the clips will act as if a close friend took them. This will highlight personal identification and authenticity for her target audience as it shows how she's living a simple life that someone may be living that same life as her.

6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required, planned equipment and any other aspects you need to arrange.
The shooting schedule taht I'm planning to meet is over the this weekend where I will film at the park, probably at Hyde Park, where I will also film my journey going there, focusing on my artist (my sister) such as going to the bus stop, being in the bus and on the train. The equipments that I will use will be my phone, making sure that when I film I'm using the right settings such as the screen being landscaped.
